History of Letavy

LETAVY was founded by students of the Faculty of Education in Banská Bystrica, Department of Art Education. The initiators were Marián „maňo“ Lacko from Rimavská Sobota and Ján Husár from Martin. The experimental year of this event took place on 2 and 3 September 1985 in the Kurinec Recreational Area, with the help of the Municipal Cultural Center and the Youth Club in Rimavská Sobota.

However, the original intention of having the annual plenary of the former school students has significantly changed in 29 years. The camp has changed to being the largest in number of participants and to the most extensive in  number of workshops in Slovakia. Around 6200 professional or non-professional artists from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany, Austria, Ukraine, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Croatia, Yugoslavia, Romania, Angola, Italy, Poland, the USA and Jordan have worked and attended the workshops.

Over the past 11 years, LETAVY has grown into an interdisciplinary event, where not only art and sculpture, but also photography, theatre, literary, dance and music workshops annually take place. In the evening programs artists perform in musical, theatrical, audiovisual and other alternative presentations. For 17 years the camp took place in the traditional term – in the third week of August in the recreational area of Kurinec just 4 kilometers from  Rimavská Sobota, then  six times it was held  in the recreational center Krokava near Hnúšťa. For the last few years we have chosen Kokava Línia recreational center with its beautiful natural scenery,  located in  the district of Poltár, to be the site for the Letavy art festival
